Julie Hughes
CO-OWNER, Indigo Art
Through my work, I strive to combine the every-day with the ephemeral. To capture real moments that are viewed from a surreal lens. My themes are not concerned with what the world should be, but rather with what the world is—while choosing to see reality with slight distortions.
Moreover, I strive to communicate the essence, power and movement of a scene or a person. Whether painting from life or in the studio, I am drawn to the tension and mood I sense in that moment. I am drawn to the life within my subject matter, the energy illuminating their form. Be it a component of nature, or the figure, each possesses a spirit that I strive to capture in my work.
My recent works are all about motion, specifically motion as we see it in the art of bicycle racing. I seek to combine my passion for painting the human figure with a love for anything related to cycling. It's all about speed, motion, and gravity-defying angles, and how such intangible things can be put on canvas in a more tangible way.
